The British Red Cross offers support to people affected by crisis by providing transport for medical appointments and essential daily needs.
The Home from Hospital project depends largely on its team of willing
volunteers to go out into their community visiting those referred to the
scheme. To the service users, a friendly face, someone with the time to chat
and spend some time with them is the key to a successful recovery and regaining
of their independence – most importantly of all, in the comfort of their own
home.
What will I be doing?
> Chatting, providing companionship and building confidence
> Shopping for a few essential items and perhaps collecting prescriptions
> Signposting to any other relevant services
> Assisting with preparation of light refreshments and drinking tea or coffee
What skills or qualities do I need?
> A desire to give up time for the benefit of others in the community
> The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
> Friendliness and a caring nature
> Good interpersonal skills including tact, patience, diplomacy, empathy and an understanding of confidentiality
> A driving license is not essential but it is desirable.
We welcome the enthusiasm that young people bring to our organisation. However, you must be aged 18 or over to be involved in this activity.
